Today, in 2012 we all live in a global community, we interact daily with people across the globe, with trading, communication and travel.
Local community and patriotism are ideas which may have worked during the days when we truly were isolated but now are outdated and damaging. Advances in…
Picking you out on the open borders thing first of all, open borders, while it sounds like a nice idea, has several massive flaws when you think about it. Sure you get free movement of people as they like, but without control, you place strain on the more “popular” countries. There will always be places that people see as desirable. This strain would come from the fact that some countries with low populations suddenly having an influx of people, and so having to provide more products such as food and fresh water. Open borders effectively punishes countries with low populations and birth rates. You also forget that , sure, while we may be “globalising”, there’s still an increased chance of conflict when you take people from one country and place them in another. For example, here in the UK you’ve probably read about people complain about other EU citizens and the likes coming and “stealing” our jobs. There’s also the case where the cheaper labour provided by this influx of people actually works out to be more expensive in the long run, as it may require training. You’ll always see cases where the majority blames a minority for its problems, whether the accusations are correct or incorrect. You can also end up with some worrying situations, such as the case where a nurse who couldn’t speak English killed a patient. Sure, the patient died due to an overdose, which has little to do with language barriers some might argue, but it highlighted an issue. Due to EU laws, we couldn’t turn aside workers who didn’t speak English, as EU laws prevent a language tests. It was only after the problem killed people and came to national attention that the European Commission deemed language tests to be legal. It took people to die before we were “allowed” by the EU to check that workers in important roles where communication is vital can speak our language. Anyhow, I got side tracked into why I dislike the EU.
Plus, the fact that you say America has closed itself off? Far from it I would argue. America seems as happy as ever to meddle in affairs that it has no sound reason to be included in. I would however agree with the Europe case, and I would highlight one thing. Does Europe not resemble your “globalisation” idea with open borders, but on a small scale? Look how well that’s working out. Countries being bound by laws that are ridiculous and aren’t decided on by themselves.
In my opinion countries should become more autonomous before a “global” community is thought about.
This isn’t even considering the cultural differences.
Fair doesn’t exist beyond a very limited scale, in my opinion.
